Amaliada (Greek: Αμαλιάδα, Katharevousa: Ἀμαλιὰς, Amalias) is a town and a former municipality in Elis, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Ilida, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit.[1] It has 32,090 citizens (of whom 18,261 live in the town of Amaliada). It is near the archaeological site of Elis, the city-state whose territory was the site for the ancient Olympic Games. It is situated on the valley of Elis, south of the Pineios River, 80 km from Patras, 7 km from Savalia, 20 km from Pyrgos 291 km from Athens, and 5 km from Kourouta on the Ionian sea. It is ranked the second largest city in Ilia (after Pyrgos). It is the westernmost city in the Peloponnese.
It was named after Queen Amalia of Greece in the 1830s, and formed by merging two communes, Kallitsa and Dervitselepi, into Amalias. It features a city square with beautiful pine trees and a fountain. Local streets are mainly in grid order running almost due north, south, east, and west. On the east side, Amaliada has a lake and public stadium (mainly used for soccer). Amaliada hospital and the monastery of Aghia Frangavilli are to the southeast. Amaliada has one train station (located west of the city square) and two in the municipal district. A street in Amaliada's west side is named Hiroshima in memory of the victims of the destruction of Hiroshima at the end of World War II. The beaches of Kourouta and Palouki are further west. The radio station for this community is the Radio Station of Amalias (RSA). The soccer team which plays for the juniors or the tertiary league is Asteras Amaliadas.
